Comedy is usually seen as the escape from everyday life, as the one to always exaggerate the situation humorously. The language character and action of the films in the genre embody this generalization. comedies usually grab everything that one could find annoying or just a nuisance in life and make fun of it and play into it to make it humorous. Comedies tend to most of the time have happy endings but there will always be outliers with some films having a more serious or even pessimistic side to the film.
When it comes to comedy it is mostly made up of the techniques that the directors use to get the message across that what has just happened on screen is something humorous. the production techniques that are used are timing, expectations, misunderstandings, flawed plan, and double entendre just to name a few. Timing is crucial to a comedy film as it is what delivers the punch line just like stand-up comic waits a while and builds up the joke to get to the punch line and get that laugh the film directors use timing as there is no audience they use timing to push their punchline. Expectations also play a huge role in whether or not an audience considers something funny rather than tacky because it is quite hard to laugh at something that one is expecting to happen. Great comedy catches one off guard, it is completely random and most of the time this is what makes a joke hilarious. Misunderstandings are also quite funny when played right because when the characters miss something that is made fully aware to the audience it plays into the simplistic yet intricate nature of comedy in the film.
Comedy is usually marketed to teen or young adult audiences as they are the ones who are most likely to understand the jokes made as maybe older generations may not be able to fully understand the more up-to-date jokes having to do with maybe newer situations. The two main types of comedies are comedian-led (with strategically placed jokes, skits, or gags) and situation-comedies which are told as part of a story. Both comedic qualities might coexist or overlap. Common comedy-major-genre combinations include musical-comedy, horror-comedy, and comedy-thriller. Romantic comedies, crime/caper comedies, sports comedies, teen or coming-of-age comedies, social-class comedies, military comedies, fish-out-of-water comedies, and gross-out comedies are only a few of the subgenres that comedies have been divided under.
Dumb and Dumber is one of the most recognized comedy films of the past years due to how effectively they went and created something truly funny. they played into most of the production techniques that I stated before such as timing, expectations, and misunderstandings in the movie the two brothers are constantly competing to see who can be the best at whatever they set for themselves as a goal and this is not in a very competitive nature but more of I think I can but in reality, I can't type of way.
21 & 22 jump street is also extremely recognized in the comedy film world. these films do the job of keeping a dull or maybe even boring movie filled with moments of jokes and humor to keep the audience's attention in movies they also use many of the productions that I stated with timing and misunderstanding playing huge roles in the punchlines in the movies.
